Deep: the Sound of the Times?

Posted by:

Tom Friedman, writing in the New York Times, has nominated “deep” as the “It” word for 2019.

Deep as in deep learning, deep surveillance, deep data, deep artificial minds, deep neural networks, with a cameo appearance by DeepMind.

In his recent Opinion piece, Friedman reviews some of the dramatic technology shifts that have come into play since 2000. He surveys multiple ways those shifts increasingly put machines in pivotal roles in processes most of us still want to consider traditional, manual, human. As he writes: “Soon, automated systems will be so humanlike that they will have to self-identify as machines.”

These lines of thinking lead naturally to Shoshana Zuboff’s recent work on prediction machines and the conceptual foundation of her new book: “The Age of Surveillance Capital.” “Deep, dark waters we’re entering,” says Friedman.
